Fuel Gases General overview of main cutting and welding gases: acetylene, propane and propylene.

A number of fuel gases are used for industrial applications, in combination with oxygen or air: e.g. acetylene, methane, propylene and propane. By definition, a fuel gas is a gas that is combustible when combined with air or oxygen.

Our experts have many decades of experience in the use of fuel gases for welding and cutting applications. Not only do we supply the full range of compressed gases in cylinders, we can also help you optimise the flame temperature and oxygen jet and advise on the appropriate safety precautions. In addition, we offer the full range of welding and cutting equipment.

 

Individual fuel gases

Acetylene is widely used as a fuel gas. Generating the hottest flame of all fuel gases, acetylene is the only commercial fuel gas that can be used for both cutting and welding applications. Other applications include soldering/brazing and flame spraying.

Propane is commonly used for heating, melting, hardening, drying, cutting and soldering/brazing applications. The propane/oxygen flame temperature is lower than the acetylene/oxygen flame.

Propylene is used for the same applications as propane. The propylene/oxygen flame has a higher flame temperature than the propane/oxygen flame, and is used in applications where a higher process performance is sought.
